Written Answers. - Departmental Libraries.

Seán Haughey

Question:

212 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance if his Department has a library or if another library comes under the aegis of his Department; the way in which staff are recruited to such libraries; if there are vacancies at the present time; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7642/02]

The details required by the Deputy with regard to my Department, and Civil Service bodies under the aegis of my Department, are as listed below.

Department of FinanceMy Department has recently expanded its library facilities. Two of the staff in the library are permanent civil servants and the Department recently conducted an open competition whereby a professional librarian was recruited. There are at present no vacancies in the library.
Office of the Revenue CommissionersIn 1999, a Librarian was assigned to revenue on a temporary contract. There is now approval from my Department for the creation of a full-time, permanent librarian post by means of a competition to be conducted by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners. The other staffing attaching to the Revenue library includes three clerical officers and one higher executive officer who are assigned on administrative duties and form part of the revenue training branch. There are at present no administrative vacancies.
Office of Public WorksThe Office of Public Works has a library service with collections at two locations, namely, 51-52 St. Stephen's Green and the Farmleigh Estate, with two professional posts, one Librarian and one assistant librarian. There are no vacancies at present; recruitment, when it arises is through the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission. There are three others on temporary contracts with the Commissioners of Public Works.
Civil Service CommissionThe Civil Service Commission holds a small resource area which is used by staff for research purposes. This resource area is not staffed.
Valuation OfficeThe Valuation Office has a reference area which is overseen by a member of staff on a part time basis.
Office of the OmbudsmanThe Office of the Ombudsman holds a reference library to assist in the examination of complaints which is maintained by staff of the corporate services unit.
State LaboratoryThe State Laboratory maintains a library which has a staffing complement of one, a professional librarian recruited by the Civil Service Commission. No vacancy exists.
