Vol. 551 No. 3

Written Answers. - Library Acquisitions.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

202 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when it is proposed to enter into discussions with a person (details supplied) with a view to accepting this person's offer in respect of rare books for the proposed library at Portumna Castle. [10415/02]

In March 2001 I received a letter from the person referred to by the Deputy which referred to an investment of £150,000 that person had made in gathering books on the Burkes and the Wild Geese. The person in question stated that he intended to take a decision on a home for his collection by December 2002 but did not directly offer the books to my Department.

The Deputy should, however, be aware that my Department has no plans to provide a library space at Portumna Castle.
