Vol. 551 No. 4

Written Answers. - Freight Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

80 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent to which it is proposed to facilitate a transfer of freight from road to rail thereby relieving road congestion; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10855/02]

Arising from the report, Iarnród Éireann: The Way Forward, I recently announced a major strategic study on plans for the country's rail network to be undertaken by my Department. The study will take account of the various rail proposals, including the development of freight traffic, which are arising from land use studies being undertaken around the country, and will provide a framework for investment in the development of the rail system over the next 20 years and identify priorities for investment.
