Vol. 551 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Property.

Michael Bell

Question:

91 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the proposed sale of land at Gormanston Military Camp for residential development is contrary to and in breach of the strategic plan for this area of County Meath and will require a rezoning of that area in line with the County Meath development plan; if his Department has consulted in this regard with the Department of the Environment and Local Government or the county manager and members of Meath County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10689/02]

As I indicated in my replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 122 and 125 on 19 February 2002, I have decided to dispose of some land at Gormanston Camp, County Meath, to fund equipment purchases for the Defence Forces. The military camp area consisting of 57 acres approximately will be retained. The future use of the lands being sold will be a matter for the purchaser in consultation with the local planning authority.
