Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Electronic Voting.

Donal Carey

Question:

446 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will establish jointly with the Minister for Education and Science a pilot project in Kilrush Community School to develop electronic voting with a view to establishing an educational package on voting procedure in a modern democracy. [11446/02]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 21 of 28 February 2002. An electronic voting and counting system will be used for the first time at the forthcoming general election in the constituencies of Meath, Dublin North and Dublin West. Following this pilot, the Government will consider the further roll-out of the system at future polls. There are no proposals to develop a pilot project along the lines suggested but I will arrange to forward more detailed information in relation to the electronic voting and counting project to the Deputy.
