John Gormley

538 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a visa can be secured for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11201/02]

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

555 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 could be given a work permit to work here. [11436/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 538 and 558 together.

A Zimbabwean national does not require a visa for travel to this country, although such a person would have to obtain leave to land from an immigration officer. If the person in question is given leave to land, she is required to register with and obtain permission to remain from the Garda Síochána if she has been in the State for more than three months since the date of arrival. It appears that the person in question does not have permission to remain in the State as the permission to remain she was granted expired on 17 June 2001. She should contact the immigration and citizenship division of my Department to arrange an appointment to discuss all aspects of her case. The issuance of work permits is a matter for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Persons are generally given permission to remain which coincides with the period of validity of a work permit.
