Question:

632 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for Education and Science the details of the proposed extension to Kilmurry national school, County Clare; when consultants will be appointed to advance the project; when funding will be provided; the approximate date for the commencement of work on the extension; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

My Department expects to be in a position during this year to give detailed consideration to an application from Kilmurry national school, County Clare, for improved accommodation as part of the expanded building programme.

Question:

633 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received a request to extend the current CABAS school at Scoil Eoin Greendale Road, Dublin; and if he has received a request to enrol a person (details supplied) in County Dublin. [11096/02]

My Department has received a request to enrol the pupil referred to by the Deputy in the CABAS facility at Scoil Eoin, Greendale Road, Dublin. The facility in question was established in 2001 to operate for a three year pilot period. The operation of the facility, which can cater for 12 children with autism, will be evaluated by my Department before any expansion is considered.

Children with autism have access to a range of special support services. To date, approximately 90 special classes dedicated to children with autism have been established within the primary sector and additional such classes are being established on an ongoing basis in response to identified need. Each such class caters for a maximum of six pupils and has the support of a teacher and at least two special needs assistants. Children attending all such facilities are also entitled to avail of the special school transport service.
The task force on autism, which I established in October 2000, has presented a comprehensive range of proposals for the development of services for children with autistic spectrum disorders. This report, which is currently being considered in my Department, will make an important contribution to the future development of services in this area.
My officials will be in contact with the parents of the pupil in question shortly to discuss the putting in place of an appropriate response to the child's educational needs.
