Vol. 552 No. 4

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

John Perry

Question:

71 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will agree to extend the length of the forestry plantation scheme for persons who planted their land in 1989 to compensate them for the fact that they are ineligible to avail of the increased payments in line with persons who entered subsequent schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12706/02]

EU afforestation schemes from 1993 onwards provide for forestry premium payments to be made to farmers for 20 years in respect of both conifers and broadleaves. The EU regulation relating to the forestry operative programme 1989-1993 provides for such payments for 20 years in respect of broadleaves. However, it precludes payment for more than 15 years in respect of conifers.
