Vol. 553 No. 1

Business of Dáil: Motion.

The next business is the arrangements for the nomination of Taoiseach. I call the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach, Deputy Brennan.

I move:

That, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, the proceedings on the nomination of Taoiseach shall be brought to a conclusion not later than 12.30 p.m., and that all divisions demanded in the House today shall be taken manually.

Is that agreed? I call Deputy Joe Higgins.

That allows 90 minutes for the procedures. Is there a guarantee that the various groupings, including the new Independent Deputies, will have an opportunity to make interventions in the debate?

I speak for my party on this matter. I understand the proposer and seconder will each speak for approximately 30 seconds. That should not take too much of the 90 minutes.

Some of us have things to say that will take more than 30 seconds.

That is true.

The Government should allow a degree of latitude for the debate to ensure those who wish to have a view expressed should be able to do so.

Is the motion opposed?

No. The Taoiseach has agreed to the amendment I propose.

Question put and agreed to.
