Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Willie Penrose

Question:

298 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm receipt of correspondence from a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath in relation to their son's learning difficulties, and in particular in relation to their application to his Department for the equipment to help the particular student; if the appropriate equipment, which would also help the person both at home and at school, will be supplied prior to September 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13052/02]

The pupil referred to by the Deputy attends a second level school. My Department has received an application for equipment from the school and correspondence from the pupil's parent. Following consideration of the application and consultation with the school principal, my Department has agreed to the provision of equipment considered suitable for the needs of the pupil. A letter approving equipment is in course of issue to the school authorities. It is a matter for the school to provide the equipment following receipt of my Department's approval. The use of the equipment in the pupil's home is a matter for the school's board of management.
