Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

John Bruton

Question:

350 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans to promote the study of physics, chemistry and mathematics in schools in accordance with the Programme for Government. [13441/02]

Revised syllabi for leaving certificate physics and chemistry were introduced in September 2000 and were examined for the first time this year. The physical science initiative, which was established to support the introduction of the new syllabi, has been in place for three years. As part of this initiative, additional resources have been provided to schools and a comprehensive in-career development programme for teachers has been implemented and is being extended for a further year.

A revised syllabus for junior cycle mathematics was introduced in 2000 and will be examined for the first time in 2003. The junior certificate mathematics support service is being augmented for the next school year. Recently my Department has requested the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, NCCA, to review the leaving certificate mathematics syllabi in the light of concerns expressed in the published report of the chief examiner for leaving certificate mathematics ordinary level examination for 2001.

The task force on physical sciences presented its report to my predecessor earlier this year. The report has now been made available for consultation, with a deadline of 1 September 2002 for comments on its findings and recommendations. An action and implementation strategy will be developed and put in place by my Department following the end of the consultation period.
