Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Fergus O'Dowd

Question:

103 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the assistance her Department can offer the redundant workers of a company (details supplied) in County Louth; if FÁS and other State agencies have been in contact with each worker regarding employment prospects, training and so on; and the efforts which have been made to find a replacement industry in the area. [13460/02]

This company has been supported by the development agencies since its establishment in 1976. Enterprise Ireland has been in ongoing contact with its receiver since his appointment last year and details have been provided of potential investors which were actively pursued.

In the case of the company in question, FÁS has been working with the former employees on a one to one basis to secure alternative employment since mid-January when some 100 workers were laid off initially. The balance of approximately 56 workers were laid off towards the end of April.

More than two-thirds of the former workforce have already found alternative employment in the area. FÁS provided assistance and support in this process. It will continue to provide support and assistance to the remaining employees until suitable alternative opportunities are found.

The development agencies are continuing to promote County Louth for new investment. IDA Ireland has applied for planning permission for five new advance buildings at Finnabair Business Park in Dundalk. Furthermore, it is envisaged that a significant information and communications technology and knowledge based industry sector will be established in the north east. Centred on Dundalk Institute of Technology and supported by Enterprise Ireland, this initiative involves the key players in economic, educational and infrastructural developments in County Louth. The objective of this initiative is to create a vibrant and sustainable knowledge based clus ter of businesses offering high quality job opportunities in the area.
