Vol. 553 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Recognition.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

108 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposed new appeals system for the recognition of new primary schools; when the new system will be in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14735/02]

The proposed appeals system referred to by the Deputy follows on from an examination and report by the Commission on School Accommodation on the criteria and procedures for the recognition of new primary schools. The commission recommended a lengthier, more thorough and time bound procedure for processing applications for the recognition of new primary schools. It also recommended that provision be made for appeal of the decision regarding any such application.

It is proposed that new criteria and procedures based on the commission's recommendations will come into effect in the case of schools seeking recognition from September 2003 onwards. These arrangements will include an independent appellate structure.
