Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Overseas Development Aid.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

128 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the extent to which it is proposed to increase the Government's contribution in overseas development aid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15279/02]

Spending on overseas development aid has increased significantly in recent years on foot of the Government's decision in September 2000 to achieve the UN target of 0.7% of GNP by the end of 2007. The programme for Government has reiterated this decision. On the basis of current forecasts for GNP, annual expenditure on ODA may be expected to reach almost €1 billion by the end of 2007.
