Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Elections Regulations.

Tony Gregory

Question:

1565 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will review measures to require voters to produce identification when voting and compiling the electoral register; and if a system linked to official identification (details supplied) will be considered. [16793/02]

Existing legal provisions governing voting and registration provide presiding officers and registration authorities with powers to request any person applying for a ballot paper to produce a specified identification document and in the case of registration to require a person to provide any information in his or her possession to the authority for the purposes of their registration duties. These arrangements are kept under review and the Deputy's suggestion is noted in this connection.
