Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Student Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

1616 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the number of late applications received for the student summer jobs scheme 2002; if applications were accepted after the closing date; and if so, the reason they were accepted when others were not. [15965/02]

The student summer jobs scheme was advertised widely in the national press and in student union publications on 4 April 2002. Posters advertising the scheme together with information leaflets and application forms were sent to student union offices in the various colleges around the country. Forms were also available in all social welfare local offices. The closing date for applications was 28 June 2002.

A total of 7,405 applications from students were received by the closing date. Some 5,551 students were approved and 1,854 were not eligible to participate in the scheme. A total of 267 applications were received after the closing date. These applications were not accepted.
