Mary Upton

Question:

217 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Defence the individual non-Governmental organisations funded or grant-aided under the various schemes run by his Department; the amount provided; and the purpose for which it was provided, in the last full year for which information is available. [16716/02]

The following grants-in-aid were paid by my Department in 2001. The Irish Red Cross Society received €773,000. A grant-in-aid is paid to the society from the Defence Vote each year. The grant provides for the running costs of the society, refugee support and payment of the State's annual contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Coiste an Asgard was given €640,000. A grant-in-aid is paid to Coiste an Asgard from the Defence Vote each year in respect of the running costs of the sail training vessel ASGARD II.
