Question:

460 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance if he will sanction the commissioning of a full feasibility study to advance a comprehensive flood relief scheme in respect of the Morrell river at Straffan and Lyreen-Meadowbrook rivers in Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17461/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 458 and 460 together.

Reports have been received to date from Kildare County Council on the Lyreen, Meadowbrook and Morrell rivers and further reports will be submitted in due course. Following discussions with the county council an interim programme of works was agreed for these rivers at an estimated cost of €1,130,500. Works are currently in progress and should be completed next year subject to environmental considerations. Discussions with the local authority are ongoing in relation to a programme of further works and studies. However, provision of funding for these can only be considered when the Estimates for 2003 are settled.
