Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Perry

Question:

598 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he has not met with the concerned parents of children attending St. Cecilia's Special School, Sligo to ensure that they have access to the multidisciplinary team; if he will grant their request; the progress which has been made; if he will agree to the meeting as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16239/02]

Overall responsibility for the delivery of services to persons with disabilities over 18 years of age rests with the relevant health authority. In the particular case in question, I understand that the health board has put in place a programme which is designed to cater for the persons involved. My Department has made a commitment to provide funding for the educational component of this programme. I understand also that this programme, which will initially operate for a one year period, will be evaluated and that the outcome of this evaluation will inform the development on ongoing support services for the persons in question.
