732 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science if a grant exists for the development of orchestras in primary and secondary schools; and if so, the details of the scheme. [17092/02]

My Department pays grants and bonuses to secondary schools for the purpose of encouraging the training of choirs and orchestras. The rates of bonuses is as follows:

A grant is also payable for the purpose of purchasing instruments in the case of schools preparing an orchestra or military band and taking my Department's examination for the first time.
The grant will not exceed 60% of the cost of the instruments, subject to a maximum grant of €285.69 to any school in respect of the expenditure incurred in any school year.
The conditions will include prior notification of intention to form an orchestra or military band, vouching of expenditure and the work of building up the orchestra or military band being subject to inspection.
Schools may co-operate in entering a choir, orchestra or military band. A choir, orchestra or military band so entered shall consist of not less than the total number of performers given below and each participating school must have in such a choir, orchestra or military band not less than the number of performers shown in partentheses after the total number. A bonus equal to the full amount payable to an individual school will be allowed to each school taking part in such a co-operative choir, orchestra or military band.

In the case of schools with an established orchestra or military band a grant of €3.81 per instrument is payable in any school year towards the cost of upkeep and, where necessary replacement of instruments, subject to a maximum of 70% of the actual expenditure incurred. My Department makes payable a capital grant not exceeding €285 for a senior orchestra, €190.46 for an intermediate orchestra or military band and €95.23 for a junior orchestra in aid of vouched expenditure for the purpose of augmenting a schools stock of musical instruments where such schools wishes to broaden the scope of its work.
