1386 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of reported murders in this State in each month in 2002; if he will compare these numbers to those for the same periods in each of the past five years; and the annual statistics for such deaths in each of the past five years. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders committed in this country per month since 1 January 2002; if he will compare these figures to those for the same period in each of the past 10 years; and the annual statistics for those years. [16769/02]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 1386 and 1399 together.
Information in relation to the number of murders that occurred is not readily available on a monthly basis prior to 1996. It would require a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources to compile such information.
The number of murders for the years 1992 to 2001 – and for January to September 2002 – and the number of murders recorded each month from 1996 to September, 2002 are set out as follows.
