Vol. 555 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Bernard Allen

Question:

253 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount of money allocated to each of the local authorities in 2002 to enable them to subsidise the affordable housing scheme; the number of houses he expects each local authority to subsidise under the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17638/02]

Capital allocations to enable local authorities to fund the provision of dwellings under the affordable housing scheme in 2002 were notified to local authorities by my Department on 12 July 2002. Within these allocations authorities can finance expenditure by way of loans from the Housing Finance Agency, or from their own resources. The following table sets out the allocation notified to each local authority.

Separate allocations are not made to authorities in respect of the subsidy which may be payable by the Department towards the cost of acquisition and development of the sites of these dwellings. Expenditure incurred for this purpose by authorities is recouped by my Department on receipt of a valid claim from the authority. Details of activity under the affordable housing scheme are published in my Department's housing statistics bulletins which are available in the Oireachtas Library. Activity under the scheme has increased significantly. At the end of 2001 there were 1,177 dwellings in progress, while at the end of June 2002, there were 1,848 dwellings in progress.

It is estimated that 86 houses were constructed-acquired by the local authorities participating in the rural resettlement scheme in the period 1997-2001. A breakdown as between the number of houses provided in each of the years in question is not available in my Department. The number of houses constructed-acquired in 2002 is not yet available.
