Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Special Educational Needs.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

236 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Education and Science if additional hours of teaching of a learning support resource teacher on a one-to-one basis can be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow. [18374/02]

My Department allocates resource posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary teaching hours to second level schools and vocational education committees to cater for special needs pupils. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each case is considered on its merits and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

In accordance with the advice of the psychological service, my Department has approved one wholetime teacher equivalent, 22 teaching hours per week, to cater for the special needs of nine pupils, including the pupil referred to by the Deputy, attending the school concerned.
