Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Marine Safety.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

243 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, if he will consider holding information seminars to publicise the new passenger boat regulations in a number of areas (details supplied) in County Cork. [17997/02]

The information seminars on the new passenger boat regulations are being organised to ensure that vessel owners and operators have comprehensive information and advice on what will be required under the new regulations. I would urge all those involved in the passenger boat business to attend one of the seminars.

The locations for the information seminars were decided upon having regard to the geographical spread of the boats that will be affected by the regulations and also the responses my Department received during the wide consultation process prior to the introduction of the regulations. It was decided that Killarney might be a suitable location based on the information available to the Department regarding the distribution of passenger boat owners involved in the south-west region of the country.

I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that it would not be feasible to hold seminars in every county. However, when the planned seminars are completed my Department will review the response and attendance at them and assess whether there is a requirement for any further seminars.

I would add that the Maritime Safety Directorate, as the organisers of the seminars, will continue to be available to answer any questions with regard to the new regulations.
