Vol. 555 No. 3

Written Answers. - Travel Timetables.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

236 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport the degree to which commuter travel times here compare favourably with those in other countries, with particular reference to comparison between cities and towns of a similar size; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18580/02]

Comprehensive comparative data of the type necessary to reply to the Deputy's question is not available. Analysis of Irish commuting patterns based on available data has been the subject of a number of reports, for example, An Analysis of Commuting Patterns from each Census of Population, DKM Economic Consultants, 1996 – available from Department of Transport.

The national spatial strategy has also produced two research reports, on transport demand and sustainable travel demand which are available on the national spatial strategy website www.irishspatialstrategy.ie. The publication of the results of the 2002 census, which sought information on commuting distances and travel times, will enable further analytical and comparative work to be undertaken on this issue.

Question No. 237 answered with Question No. 80.
