Vol. 555 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dairy Industry.

Billy Timmins

Question:

159 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has agreed a date to lead an IFA-dairy industry delegation to meet Commissioner Fischler; if so, when; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18590/02]

During recent months I have maintained constant contact with Commissioner Fischler in relation to the international downturn in the market for dairy products and have pressed for appropriate action from the Commission to support the market and maintain producer incomes.

Arising from these contacts, export refunds were increased for skimmed milk powder and whole milk powder on seven separate occasions, export refunds were increased for butter three times and cheese refunds were increased by 22%. Also, the rate of aid for casein production was increased in three steps by 83%. In addition, large quantities of butter and skimmed milk powder have been placed in intervention, thereby removing large volumes of product from the market. Since these measures were taken there have been indications that the market is recovering which will help alleviate the pressure on producer incomes.
As regards a joint farmer and industry meeting with the Commissioner, I have already indicated to the IFA that I would be willing to facilitate such a contact at an appropriate time. I have raised the matter with Commissioner Fischler and I expect that the necessary arrangements will be made at a convenient time.
