I am informed by the Garda authorities that an assistant commissioner has been appointed to carry out inquiries into this matter and that work is ongoing in this regard. Arising from the judgment delivered by the Court of Criminal Appeal which is referred to in the question, I issued a public statement on 1 August 2002, to the effect that the Garda Commissioner had, on that day, suspended two members of the Garda Síochána, a superintendent and a garda. My statement also mentioned that a third member of the Garda Síochána referred to in the judgment, a detective garda, already stood suspended. The position of the superintendent who stands suspended will be the subject of consideration by the Government. The Deputy will under stand that, in the circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the matter.
