Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Council for Special Education.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

242 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 51 of 26 June 2002, when the National Council for Special Education will be established. [19244/02]

I intend to fast-track the establishment of the National Council for Special Education by way of ministerial order. Work on this order is at an advanced stage and I hope to be in a position to lay this before both Houses of the Oireachtas in the near future.

In tandem with its work on the order, my Department is also developing the administrative and organisational arrangements which are essential to underpin the establishment of the council. The Deputy will appreciate the scale of this undertaking, involving as it does the bringing into being of a completely new body with a vitally important remit. It is my intention that the National Council for Special Education will commence its operations in the first half of next year.
