Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

Finian McGrath

Question:

178 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the massive increase in workload of the Revenue Commissioners since the introduction of the tribunals; if there has been an increase in staffing to relieve the staff; and, if so, the number of staff involved. [18908/02]

I am aware that the work of the Revenue Commissioners has expanded in recent years as a result of various factors. These factors include the substantial growth in the numbers in employment and the obtaining of detailed information about tax evasion. This information has become available as a consequence of the use of additional powers given to revenue in 1999 and from the work of various tribunals and inquiries.

The Revenue Commissioners sought additional staff to assist them in dealing with their increased workload generally and I approved an increase of over 400 staff for revenue in 1999-2000. Over half of these were specifically for audit/investigation work, including work related to tribunals, and I understand that deployments have been made accordingly following the necessary specialist training.

The Deputy will appreciate that various administrative improvements, including developments in telephonic and information technology and new work practices generally, operate so as to produce significant efficiencies and reduce work burdens on staff. The overall position as regards staffing levels will, of course, be kept under review.
