Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teachers' Remuneration.

Finian McGrath

Question:

155 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if the recent OECD report proves once again that teachers are delivering a quality education service; and his views on whether teachers should receive a substantial pay increase. [20755/02]

Ireland compares favourably in many of the OECD comparisons, which is a reflection of the quality of our schools and teachers and the ability of our young people to meet the many and varied challenges they are likely to face in the future.

The public service benchmarking body recently carried out a detailed examination into the jobs, pay and conditions of public servants, including teachers, and compared these with jobs of equal size in the private sector. The benchmarking body recommended an increase of 13% in pay for teachers and between 13% and 17.6% in the case of principals and deputy principals. The overall increase in public service pay costs arising from the body's recommendations is 8.9%.
