Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

David Stanton

Question:

377 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Transport when new rolling stock will be in place on the mainline rail network; the amount and cost of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21071/02]

Iarnród Éireann has informed me that it is about to place in the coming weeks a contract for the supply of 67 new carriages for use on InterCity routes. The total cost will be €117 million and funding is being provided by the Exchequer under the national development plan. The vehicles are scheduled for delivery in late 2005 and following normal testing and commissioning procedures, they will enter service shortly thereafter.

In addition, Iarnród Éireann will commence acceptance of a fleet of 80 diesel railcars in early December some of which will be used on regional services serving Dublin from early next summer after they have completed testing and commissioning.
