Vol. 557 No. 2

Written Answers. - Political Representations.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

70 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his response to such representations as he may have received on behalf of persons (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21438/02]

The five Cuban men to whom Deputy Gilmore's question refers were convicted in the United States on charges ranging from espionage to conspiracy in first degree murder, following an investigation into the deaths of two young Cuban-Americans when the plane they were piloting was shot down on its way to drop leaflets over Havana in support of a human rights demonstration in the city. I understand the convictions are to be the subject of an appeal. It is essential that this appeal be conducted in a manner which is fair and impartial and free from political considerations. It would be inappropriate, therefore, for me to comment on the trial.
