Olwyn Enright

Question:

125 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the reason grant approval for tree planting has been frozen since 1 October 2002 resulting in insecurity and an inability to plan for persons involved in the forestry industry; and his plans to cut back on the provision of grant aid or premia for the remainder of 2002 and into 2003. [22429/02]

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

311 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the position regarding the forest services; if the forest service has discontinued issuing approvals for afforestation; his views on whether this is a very serious matter particularly at the start of the planting season; the repercussions this may have for all aspects of afforestation and for workers involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22657/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 111, 125 and 311 together.

My Department continues to receive and consider applications for afforestation. For the last couple of weeks no new commitments were approved pending publication of the Book of Estimates. I am reviewing the general situation in consultation with the forestry sector in light of the funding available for next year and the Minister of State will meet representatives of the forestry sector in that regard tomorrow.

This Government remains committed to the continued development of the forestry sector in the long-term. I am confident that we can, with the support of the sector, deliver a viable planting programme next year.
