Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Domestic Violence.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

186 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason the research carried out in October 2000 entitled, Men and Domestic Violence: What Research Tells Us, has not been published to date; and if his Department is providing equivalent funding to organisations tackling male victims of domestic abuse and to female victims of domestic abuse. [22885/02]

The draft report, Men and Domestic Violence: What Research Tells Us, was commissioned from external consultants by my Department in collaboration with the North-Eastern Health Board. The report is a literature review of research carried out abroad on domestic violence and it was undertaken because of the lack of data on male victims of domestic violence in Ireland.

The draft report was presented to my Department in October 2000 and was then sent to relevant official agencies seeking their views. As a number of issues were raised during this consultation process my Department has arranged for the document to be peer reviewed. I will take a final decision on publication of this report when this process is complete. As well as funding this research, my Department has made funding available to the organisation, AMEN, which provides services to male victims of domestic violence. Details of this funding to date are set out in the following table:

1999

£16,000 (€20,315.81)

(AMEN)

2000

£10,000 (€12,697.38)

(AMEN)

2000

£40,000 (€50,789.52)

(Research)

2001

£50,000 (€63,486.90)

(AMEN)

2002

€20,000

(AMEN)

My Department also provides funding to the health boards for the provision of health related services to women victims of domestic violence. A total of €11.463 million (£9.025 million) is now being spent from the Health Vote on such services. The National Crime Council is conducting a national survey of the incidence of domestic violence. This should provide data in the Irish context which will inform future policy in this area.
