Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sporting Facilities.

Jack Wall

Question:

172 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if, in his Department's survey of all local sporting facilities in the county, he will include consultation with local authorities in regard to such needs in large housing estates in the local authority areas and the potential of using local authority land to develop such facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24018/02]

Planning of the proposed national audit of local sports facilities will take place as part of the development of a new long-term strategic plan for the provision of sports facilities.

A number of local authorities are already engaged in carrying out an inventory of sports facilities in their areas and the Department will closely examine the methodologies, standards and parameters used by them.

It is intended to set up an inter-agency steering group to plan and oversee the project, which will include local authority involvement. There is also at present a process of ongoing consultation with local authorities on applications for funding under the sports capital programme operated by my Department.
