Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

208 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to seriously combat crime in the approach to Christmas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24033/02]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that Operation Encounter, which commenced in February 2001, has increased the number of gardaí available to carry out patrols and to target areas where public order and assault offences are likely to be committed. During the Christmas period Garda management will deploy resources to areas that require attention. The prevention and detection of crime remains a key focus for the Garda Síochána.
