Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

215 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there will be cutbacks that would reduce the number of gardaí on the beat or on patrol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24041/02]

The Abridged Estimates for the Garda Vote for 2003 shows an increase of almost €19 million over the 2002 provision. This represents a 2% increase overall. It is too early to comment in detail on Garda services in 2003 as detailed budgets have not yet been prepared. The primary aim will be to maintain the existing level of front-line policing services to the public by focusing on key services, increasing efficiency and getting best value for money.
