Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Damien English

Question:

53 Mr. English asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to mandate closed circuit television systems both inside and outside of nightclubs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23756/02]

The Criminal Justice (Public Order) Bill, 2002, which is before the House, contains a provision that will allow a court to specify, on the making of a closure order in respect of a premises such as a nightclub, that prior to the annual renewal of a licence or registration applicable to that premises, certain requirements would have to be fulfilled including, for example, the installation of a CCTV system. The Bill provides, in addition, that the court may also consider imposing restrictions on the type of substances which may be sold in the premises or placing limits on the number of persons who may be admitted. I believe that is the best way to ensure that owners of these and other premises covered by the Bill meet their responsibilities in this area.
