Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Billy Timmins

Question:

69 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress or otherwise, made in the investigation into clerical sexual abuse in Dublin Diocese; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23629/02]

As I have previously informed the House, the Garda Commissioner has appointed a detective chief superintendent to conduct an analytical review of all cases of clerical sexual abuse previously reported to and investigated by the Garda Síochána and to review particular cases with a view to establishing whether further lines of inquiry might be available which would lead to the preferring of criminal charges. I am informed that the detective chief superintendent is investigating new cases which have come to notice as a result of the special telephone line set up for victims. As the Deputy will be aware, it is not the practice that Ministers comment in detail on ongoing Garda investigations which are operational matters for the Garda authorities. I also refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 46 of today's date.
