Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Attendance.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

130 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the records his Department keeps with regard to primary school children who attend school infrequently or not at all; the guidelines which are given to schools in which such children have been enrolled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24202/02]

Details of the attendance at school of primary school children continue to be kept by the relevant school. They are not kept by my Department.

The National Educational Welfare Board has been established as the statutory body to deal with the issues, which arise in relation to school attendance, in accordance with the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000. The board, advised by its staff, including its senior staff which it is currently recruiting, and in accordance with the Act, will determine its record requirements and will communicate these and other relevant information to schools and other relevant parties.
