Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Seán Crowe

Question:

163 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí based in Tallaght Garda station; the units or special squads they may be attached to; the number available for duty on the ground in Tallaght on each shift; the number of community gardaí based in Tallaght Garda station; and if he proposes to take steps to increase these numbers. [24084/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the allocation of Garda personnel to individual areas, that the personnel strength of Tallaght Garda station as at 27 November 2002 is 156, all ranks.

There are four regular units of uniform gardaí attached to Tallaght Garda station with an average personnel strength of 18. Garda personnel in Tallaght Garda station are allocated to the following units: District Detective Unit; Drugs Unit; Community Police; Traffic Duties; Juvenile Liaison Office; Crime Prevention Office; Collator; Summons Server; Warrant Office; Court Presenters Office; Special Resource Unit; Prison/Court Duties; Staff Office; Clerical Duties; Task Force.

There are currently 24 personnel, all ranks, attached to the community policing unit at Tallaght Garda station. The personnel strength of Tallaght Garda station is constantly monitored and reviewed by the Garda authorities. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public.

I have been assured that the allocation of personnel to Tallaght Garda station will be kept under review and, when additional personnel next become available, the needs of that station will be fully considered within the context of the overall needs of Garda stations throughout the country.
