Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Authority Elections.

Willie Penrose

Question:

63 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the discussions he has had with the General Council of County Councils, concerning the planned direct election of county and city mayors in 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23869/02]

A deputation from the General Council of County Councils met with me on 24 October 2002 to discuss a range of matters, including the direct election of chairs in accordance with the Local Government Act, 2001. The general council indicated some concern about the possible effects of the new provisions for directly elected chairs. In response, I undertook to complete consideration of these concerns within a short period, and well in advance of the 2004 elections.
