Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - An Post Savings Accounts.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

199 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he will recommend to An Post that a direct debit facility be made available for elderly people who are making investments and savings through their An Post savings account; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that other financial institutions have such direct debits in place. [24424/02]

I understand the system used by An Post does not allow for direct debits from other institutions into a post office savings bank account. In 2003 An Post will implement a new computer system for POSB accounts and will examine the feasibility of a direct debit facility in this context. Unfortunately, An Post is unable to make such a facility available in the meantime.
