Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

231 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the process to date in regard to the provision of new facilities to replace St. Patrick's post primary school, Naas, County Kildare; the original plan in respect of the project; the proposals and position; the likely outcome with particular reference to meeting the needs of the school in the short to medium term; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24317/02]

A proposal from County Kildare Vocational Education Committee to dispose of the existing St. Patrick's post primary school, Naas, County Kildare and to provide accommodation on a new site has been considered in my Department.

This proposal raised a number of concerns which necessitated clarification by reference to legal advice. Following this advice, my Department's post primary building unit informed the chief executive officer that it was not in a position to approve the proposal.

In the circumstances, the now acting chief executive officer has been requested to put forward an alternative accommodation proposal for the school. A response is currently awaited.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

232 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the current requirements in respect of facilities sought by the school authorities at Maynooth post primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; the precise position in regard to the provision of such facilities; whether the intention is to meet such requirements as set out; if any delay is expected; if he will set out his projections as to when requirements are likely to be met based on submissions received from the school authorities; his Department's knowledge of the likely progress; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24318/02]

The proposed extension at Maynooth post primary school comprises six general classrooms and a number of specialist rooms together with the larger sized PE hall.

The stage 3 (developed sketch scheme) has been examined within my Department's post primary building unit. It has been necessary to seek further clarification on a number of items from the chief executive officer of County Kildare VEC and his design team regarding this submission.

A response has been received and is being examined by my Department's technical staff.

When this examination is completed, subject to all being satisfactory, the question of allowing the project to proceed to stage 4 (detail design) will be considered in the context of the capital allo cation for the post primary building unit for 2003, existing commitments and competing priorities.
