Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - Appointments to State Boards.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

354 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Transport if he will report on the precise status of the chairman of a company (details supplied); if this is an executive or a non-executive position; when it was so designated; the difference in terms and conditions between an executive and a non-executive chairman in the case of a semi-State company; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24723/02]

The chairperson of the board of Aer Rianta is appointed in accordance with section 27 of the Air Navigation and Transport (Amendment) Act, 1998. With the exception of CIE, the chairpersons of semi-State companies under the aegis of my Department, including Aer Rianta, are appointed on a non-executive basis and are required to devote as much time to the performance of their duties as may be necessary for the proper and efficient discharge of their duties.

The fees paid to the chairpersons of State companies are at the rates authorised by the Minister with the consent of the Minister for Finance. The chairman of Aer Rianta was re-appointed for a five year term with effect from 1 October 1999. In the case of CIE, the executive chairman is currently required to perform his duties on a full-time basis.
