Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fur Industry.

Tony Gregory

Question:

168 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the manner in which farmed fox and farmed mink are killed here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24291/02]

Foxes are slaughtered by lethal injection or electrocution. Mink are slaughtered by the use of carbon monoxide gas. Both procedures are allowed under Schedule 6 of the EC (Protection of Animals at Time of Slaughter) Regulations, 1995 – S.I. No. 114 of 1995 – and under the Council of Europe recommendation concerning fur animals.
