Vol. 558 No. 6

Written Answers. - Consumers Association of Ireland.

Bernard Allen

Question:

21 Mr. Allen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will increase the funding of the Consumers Association of Ireland in view of the outstanding contribution of this organisation towards consumer rights and information; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24899/02]

As part of the 2001 budget measures a decision was taken to provide an Exchequer grant of €63,000 per annum to the Consumers Association of Ireland for 2001, 2002 and 2003. The purpose of this grant is to enhance the capacity of the association to act as a consumer watchdog and advisory body.

The CAI has a central role in developing a much stronger consumer lobby. Consumers in Ireland are not at all as organised as in other member states. As a consequence they do not have the same impact as other interest groups in informing the policy process. When I addressed the members of the CAI at their AGM last month I told them I want this situation to change. I would like to see the CAI strengthened and expended and a far greater level of co-operation with other consumer organisations. The development of effective policies requires the input and critical analysis of all those who can articulate the views and concerns of consumers. The CAI has been advised that the issue and level of future Exchequer funding will be addressed on receipt from the organisation of a three year strategic plan for their future development.
