Vol. 559 No. 2

Written Answers. - Animal Health.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

65 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on whether it is necessary to set up a public inquiry into the mystery deaths of hundreds of animals in the Askeaton area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25769/02]

The reported animal disease problems in the Askeaton area were the subject of a multi-agency investigation under the auspices of the Environmental Protection Agency, in which my Department participated. The report of a most comprehensive investigation was published in August 2001. In light of such an exercise I do not believe that there exists a case for a public inquiry.
