Written Answers. - State Examinations.

David Stanton

Question:

245 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of students who sat the junior certificate examination in 2001; the total fees collected; the numbers exempted from fees; the number who did not pay fees and had no exemption; the number of certificates withheld as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26826/02]

Some 60,122 candidates sat one or more subjects at the 2001 junior certificate examination. The total fees collected amounted to €2,812,325.51.

Some 16,731 candidates were exempt from fees under my Department's fee alleviation scheme whereby candidates who are the holders of, or dependent on, the holder of a medical card are exempted from payment of fees.

Some 906 candidates who were not exempt and who did not pay fees received a statement of their results but did not receive their examination certificates.
