Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

Jack Wall

Question:

280 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans in relation to a project on diabetic allowances under the medical card system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26563/02]

Persons suffering from diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus may apply to their local health board for inclusion in the long-term illness scheme. This scheme allows them to receive a range of drugs and medicines for the treatment of that condition free of charge. I do not have any plans to introduce an allowance in the general medical services scheme for persons suffering from diabetes.
